Weird Plants

So you may remember from my post, Beginning Gardening, that I planted these plants in July. I stopped taking care of them in the middle of October when it started getting cold and school started getting busy. About 2 weeks ago, I went outside, thinking they would be all dead and I would clean them up (they are annuals). Well they weren't. I talked to a bunch of people and everybody said "That's weird. They will die soon." That was two weeks ago. And then they got covered in snow for 2 days. And a week straight of freezing weather ALL DAY LONG. And they are still blooming. Not as much as in August, but those red flowers are new since I went out 2 weeks ago. Please explain.
