35 Weeks

And these pictures were just taken yesterday, so it's recent.  I am feeling like there is too much to do and not enough time left.  All of it is just little stupid stuff...but May got away from me.  And Andrew and I played all weekend, which was exactly what we needed, but now I am feeling a little behind.  So sorry if this post sounds stressy...we really are doing great!

I can't really believe that in two weeks baby can come any time!  I know the baby could come right now and no one would panic about trying to stop my labor...but in two weeks I will be in "the window" where the midwives are cleared to deliver baby Bybee here at home.  We have a little to-do list of things we want to get done before then:
  • Write thank you notes from our last two showers,  I've been terrible!
  • Pack hospital bag (just in case)
  • Go on tour of the hospital and pre-register, next Wednesday!  (again, just in case)
  • Get a mesh gate up in the car so that we can keep Lucy in the way back, behind the seat.  That way we can vacuum the backseat of the car, install the carseat, and get it checked for safety.
  • Make a good stock of muffins, I devoured all the ones in the freezer!
  • Compile directions for things like running laundry, taking care of Lucy, and things I might like to try during labor so that those supporting me have the information they need.
  • Make a few hats (Andrew) and a few more rice-heat bags (Lauriel).
  • Buy the supplies we need to get our house ready, nothing fancy...just some light shopping and organizing.

I'm still doing pretty good keeping the swelling in check.  I had a couple of days that my feet got a little puffy when the weather was really warm (ha, PNW warm!).  But I have been trying to step up my water intake and I find that helps. So do baths.  Both of those also help my calf cramps which are crazy ridiculous if I don't watch the fluids.  It's about the only thing that get me to jump out bed that quickly!  Got any suggestions for calf cramps that go up the side of your leg?  I have no idea how to stretch those out!

Sometimes I feel ravenous, other times nothing sounds good.  Cherry-coke slurpees sound good to me ALL of the time.  Not exactly the most healthy treat, so I try to keep some limits.

We have been doing pretty good at wearing me out with lots of walking or squatting working in the garden.

Still can't believe the end of this pregnancy is sneaking up so quickly, it's going by faster than I thought it would!

And if you don't think I look big, check out the difference from two weeks ago. Same shirt even, so you can't blame it on clothes.  I definitely feel bigger every day now.

Still here

But with nothing specific that I feel motivated to blog about.  Especially with Andrew gone on a band trip tonight...I'm feeling lazy and unmotivated.

Less then 6 weeks left until baby is due and less then a month left of work, time is flying!

My house is a mess.  But the kind of mess that would take an hour to clean if I really just got up and did it.

We had two baby showers last weekend, one on Saturday and one on Monday.  They were both perfect and we were thoroughly spoiled.  I'm waiting for pictures and then I will tell you more about them.

I'm having braxton-hicks contractions fairly frequently now.

We got a dozen eggs from our neighbors today.  So glad to be getting fresh eggs again, but I wish we had the funds right now to build our own chicken coop.

Our next visit with the midwives is a home visit.

Lucy is driving me crazy because she keeps barking at all of the kids playing outside.  It doesn't help that they keep running up to pet her and then running away again.

I'm craving cherry-coke slurpees.  And the 7-11 isn't that far out of my way on my way home from work.

I got free plant starts today from the Life Skills students at our school...and I'm too lazy to go plant them tonight.

The baby's room is looking bright and cheerful with a finished dresser and some awesome homemade quilts.  Just need to get a few last things, get organized, and finished those murals.  If I weren't so lazy tonight I would go take some pictures and show off our progress.

I finally got some good fitting nursing bras.  And I'm much more comfortable.  I should have done it a month ago.

I weigh exactly the same as I did when I started weight watchers and decided to get healthy a couple of years ago.  But my clothes don't fit the same.  Bodies are funny things.

There are tons of lilacs blooming around here right now.  I love their smell.  So glad we have lilacs in our yard.

I love reading Ina May Gaskin's books.  I just got another one from our midwives at my appointment yesterday and I already love it.  They are perfect for a positive mindset at this point in pregnancy.

I have been applying for jobs for next year, there are a few at some school districts about 40 minutes away.  I want to stay at my school.  Change is a hassle and I don't want to commute.  The state budget is set or close to it, so I'm hoping our district will know more soon.

We've planted onions, peas, and kale in our new garden plot.  And I have an awesome strawberry patch that I love.  I want to get some beans and squashes going.

I'm excited to see my family this weekend, and for the extra day of sleeping in and being away from work.

I think I'm going to take a bath and go to bed early tonight.

Lucy's Fence

This is the look we were frequently getting from Lucy. Covered in mud, but wanting to come in. Then, last weekend, Andrew moved her electric fence line to block off her access to the mud. Much nicer! No more wrestling a hundred lb dog and a freezing cold hose. Although, she does still give us sad faces through the door when we don't want to come out and play.

Quinoa and Black Bean Chili

We got this recipe from our friends over here, and we love it!  This is the second time we have made it in the past month, which is saying a lot for us since we haven't been cooking much.  It doesn't look like much, but it tastes great and is full of protein, something I am currently needing lots of!  Get the recipe here, and try it!  Thanks Kira and Murphy for the great suggestion!

A room for Baby Bybee

This is still a work in progress and the work is definitely going much slower then the first six steps. But I have to say I love the color and fun that we are adding to the room.

Blueberry Zucchini Bread Muffins

CIMG0156
We've been needing more ready made, easy to eat on the go, and healthy food around the house. So I took this recipe, and changed a few things.

I replaced chocolate chips with blueberries
I added 3 tablespoons ground flax seed
Added the previously optional 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Replaced 3/4 cup oil for 3/4 cup applesauce

Baked them up as muffins, froze half, and have devoured the remaining half.  They are tasty, filling snack for solving on-the-go instant starvation!

33 weeks

Andrew took some good photos of me and belly last Saturday evening and I thought I would share. Notice the rain in the photos? We've been getting a lot of that.

For some reason I just noticed that my due date is on a Tuesday...I've been counting it on a Wednesday all this time. So most of my dates are off. I'm 33 weeks today, not tomorrow. I'm a dork.

In me and belly news:
  • I got a hair cut about a week ago.  Very nice to take some of the uneven length off of the bottom.
  • I make funny noises getting up off the couch sometimes.  Okay, frequently.
  • My shoes are starting to feel tight, I wish I could wear flip flops all of the time.
  • I get winded easily.
  • Baby moves a lot and it's fun to push back.
  • We sanitized the jets in the bathtub so that they are clean enough to use during labor.
  • We have started working on our birth plan...which feels funny since we are on the same page as our midwives.  But I know it is for that just in case circumstance.
  • We are done with our birthing class.
  • I don't feel hungry near as much...and I can't eat a very large meal.  Snacking from here on out!
  • I've got a decent play list of music going.  Working now on eliminating songs that don't seem quite right.
  • It's amusing to watch me roll over or get out of bed.  Takes a bit of planning now.
  • I'm counting down the last 5 weeks of work.  They are going to be long.
  • We have two baby showers coming up, one on Saturday and one on Monday...I'm excited!

More about RIF

Since I've been getting lots of questions already about the RIF process and what that means, I thought I would direct people to the short article that our superintendent wrote for the Ferndale Record.  You can read it here or I have copied and pasted it below, I thought it was more clear and concise than any explanation that I could attempt.

OP ED on Reduction in Force
By Linda Quinn
May 9, 2011

Unfortunately, “RIF” has become an all-too-common verb in pubic schools. An acronym for “Reduction in Force,” to RIF is to lay someone off. The recession has made RIFing a regular feature of the annual budget development cycle in school districts.

Reduction in Force is directly related to the economy. Like most others, our district spends about 80% of its budget on salaries and benefits for employees. Therefore, when we have less money coming in and/or the cost of doing business goes up, we have to reduce our number of employees to balance the budget.

Since I’m freqently asked questions about the when, how, why, and who of the RIF process, I want to try to answer some of them.

The when of RIFing is determined by Washington law, which mandates districts notify any certificated employee they may not be able to employ the following school year by May 15 of the current year. (“Certificated” refers to teachers, counselors and other employees required to hold specialized certificates to work in schools; bus drivers, custodians and office workers who don’t need such certificates are called “classified” and aren’t subject to the same RIF timelines.)

The May 15 deadline is problematic because we can’t determine the exact number of certificated employees we’ll be able to afford next year until the state legislature adopts its budget, which rarely happens by May 15. Therefore, we have to estimate, and we’re compelled to estimate conservatively.

I’ve been asked, “Why do you RIF a teacher and then turn around a month or two later and hire her back? That just seems mean.” We are put in this position because the rules prohibit RIFing teachers after May 15, even if our financial situation gets worse. Every certificated employee who doesn’t get RIFed is guaranteed his or her job for the entire following year. On the other hand, we are allowed to take people off the RIF list after May 15 if our financial situation improves.

Because we know RIFs are hard on people, we try to estimate the number as close as possible without putting the district into financial jeopardy. Although we’re forced to be conservative, we hope our worst case scenario isn’t realized so we can hire back RIFed teachers.

The how of the RIF process is related to when. Since we’re required to make our RIF list before the state adopts a budget, we estimate the minimum number of teachers we can employ based on two things: (1) our prediction about the size of the budget shortfall, and (2) the educational needs of our students. Using this information, the school board sets a “minimum educational program.” (Our 2011-2012 program is on the district’s website.)

Once we know how many teachers we can guarantee employment the following year, we have to determine who will be RIFed, which is based on (1) the minimum educational program, and (2) the contract between the school district and the teachers’ union (FEA).

Who gets RIFed has nothing to do with how much we appreciate and respect the work of individual teachers. Rather, the FEA contract dictates RIFing based on seniority within categories. It also dictates who’s called back first when we’re able to undo some of the lay-offs. The teacher with the least seniority in a particular category is the first laid off and the last called back.

The why of RIFs is all about money. Our revenue is decreasing and our expenses are increasing.

The recession has taken a greater toll on Ferndale teachers than educators in some other places for several reasons, which are outlined in a longer version of this article published in the “Budget Center” on Ferndale School District’s website.

If there’s anything good about this process, it’s that teachers RIFed in May will receive full pay and benefits through the end of their contract on August 31. Unlike employees in other professions who come to work to find their job has been eliminated that day, teachers have time to plan.

Also, lots can happen in 3 ½ months to change the situation. Many teachers who’ve been RIFed in Ferndale in the past have gotten their jobs back before missing a single paycheck. In May 2009, 19 Ferndale teachers were RIFed; by fall,14 had been rehired. A similar pattern occurred in 2010: 19 teachers RIFed in May; by fall, all but two rehired in our district or one nearby.

RIFed teachers stay on the hire-back list for two years or until they accept a comparable position in another district. This means a they have first option on any opening for which they are qualified.

I won’t minimize the psychological hardship on our RIFed teachers, their students, families and colleagues. This is a difficult process, and I hate it. My heart goes out to the young educators directly impacted. We value them and the work they do immensely. However, we can only provide what the state and local community can afford.

Our situation would be much worse without local levy support from the citizens of Ferndale. When times were good, we used levy dollars to pay for “extras” for our students. During these tough times, levy dollars prevent more RIFing.

Since May 15 falls on a Sunday this year, RIF day will be Friday, May 13. Please join me in offering support to those Ferndale teachers who receive RIF notices that day, some of them for the third time. Let them know how much we care and that we’re all hoping their RIFs will be undone as soon as possible.

Linda Quinn, Superintendent
Ferndale School District

Update

I didn't miss too many days in between posts this time!  Recently:

I received my RIF, or reduction in force letter, from Ferndale School District.  Basically, this means that I am laid off.  There is a decent chance they will hire me back, but because the state legislature hasn't finished the budget, the district has to plan for the worst case scenario and let teachers go.  No fun, but I've known it was coming and wasn't too surprised.

We went by the Bellingham Public Market yesterday for the first time this season.  I love that place, so many good smells and homemade goods to examine.

We've been working on the baby's room, it's still not finished but I have a few update pictures to share this week.

We've been trying to get back in the habit of cooking, and are actually trying to get ahead by freezing meals and snacks so we have food ready for the arrival of baby.  I'm hoping to post some recipes this week.

I've been working on my thesis again and am really hoping to finish by late summer or early fall.  It's tedious...but good.

We had to turn in the yearly fecal test for Lucy to continue attending Doggie Daycare, and it came back that she has giardia!  Poor pup!  We had no idea!  Looking back we can see a few of the symptoms...but she seemed fine.  She is on antibiotics now, which she loves since they come to her wrapped in peanut butter.

We start a new obedience class with Lucy tomorrow night.  It will go right up until the baby is born.  We are hoping it will help us keep working with her and keep increasing her focus and obedience.

Goats!

No, not ours.  Maybe some day, but right now we have enough other projects going on that we don't need to take on goats.  The same neighbors who helped us out with the garden plot have goats, and one of them just had kids!  They have been very generous in letting us come over and get our baby animal fix.  They are adorable, all full of energy and antics. Pictures don't do them justice, but enjoy anyways!

Garden Plot

When we first moved in, we didn't think that we would be getting much of a garden plot in. We just didn't have the time and energy to turn over and prepare the space before it was too late for this year. Then one of our very kind neighbors offered to turn over a plot for us with his tractor. Which went much faster, only about 10 minutes! He is going to come turn it over again for us this week before we start planting. Still not sure how much we will actually get planted, but it is nice to have the space and know that we can get something in the ground this year.

Lawn Mower & Yard

We haven't had many days that feel like spring around here. Mostly it has been cold, and rainy. Like Washington Winter cold and rainy. On those few days that feel like Spring, we've been outside...that's when all the pictures were taken!

Despite the lack of Springy weather, there are still a few signs of new growth outside. A major one being the lawn! We got a great deal on a riding lawn mower from Andrew's uncle, and it has already been put to use. It turned mowing the lawn from an all day chore to a 45 minute, after work kind of chore. I can't really speak to how easy it was since I just sat and watched...but Andrew said it was nice.

Lucy's Settling In

We have been loving our yard, especially on the sunny days. We especially love having the invisible dog fence in so that Lucy can be outside and we don't have to worry about her taking off and bothering people. She does some crazy wild dog running!

Lately, she has been enjoying the mud down in the front part of our yard.  She doesn't, however, enjoy the hosing off she has to get after.

1 month

Sunday marked the one month anniversary of being in our new home.  We celebrated this weekend by hanging pictures and getting started on the babies room.  Pictures to come, I promise!  Looking around the house and yard, we are settling in pretty well.  Some new landmarks in the past couple of weeks:

All of the boxes that will be unpacked are unpacked.  We have a few boxes of craft and office supply stuff that aren't going anywhere for a while.

All of the rooms are painted except the bathrooms and hallway...which can wait a while longer!

Pictures are hung, amazing how much homier that makes a house.

Andrew got these record boxes painted so that they match our living room.
CIMG0134
The invisible dog fence is in, and Lucy is trained to be outside alone (more pictures of that later this week!).

We moved the fence line slightly this weekend to make room for the garden plot our neighbor is going to till for us.

We got a riding lawn mower which Andrew has used for the first time already (pictures coming!).

I staked out the area that I am going to slowly turn into my herbs/perennial garden bed.

The cats have adjusted to being garage cats and go in and out freely. Although Abbey did spend the entire day on Sunday sitting on the roof. Whether by choice or shear stupidity, we don't know.

I am still feeling great! Taking lots of baths in the evenings, but that may or may not be pregnancy related :) I love feeling this baby move all of the time, it's mesmerizing to watch my belly move. It's definitely got a life of it's own! Despite feeling pretty good most of the time, I have to admit that I will be happy when the next 7 weeks are over and I am done having to work!
